Communicating with Colleagues

Communication is the key to vital understanding. Whether it’s your family, your friend circle or your office colleagues, without proper communication, thoughts remain unnervingly scattered. Its significance is especially realized when it comes to working with a team of individuals coming from diverse backgrounds. To be able to communicate effectively is a necessity so important that its mere absence could lead to turmoil in your life.

Allah ﷻ says in the Qur’an,

“He has taught him to talk (and understand).”

[Qur’an 55: 4] .

Communication is, therefore, the basis of existence.

Following are some brief, easy-to-remember tips to help enhance your communication skills in the light of Sunnah:

1. Smile.

“Your smiling in the face of your brother is charity.”

[Jami’ At-Tirmidhi, 1956] .

2. Watch your tone and volume.

“And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys.”

[Qur’an 31: 19] .

3. Shake hands.

“There are no two Muslims who meet and shake hands, but they will be forgiven before they part.”

[Sunan Ibn Majah, 3703].

4. Correct and teach when necessary.

The Prophet ﷺ used to listen with absolute attention, and he ﷺ would enjoin good and forbid evil.

5. Be simple with your words.

“I have been given superiority over the other prophets in six respects: I have been given words which are concise but comprehensive in meaning…”

[Sahih Muslim, Book 4, Hadith 1062] .

6. Avoid arguments and anger.

“And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute (with one another) lest you lose courage and your strength depart, and be patient. Surely, Allah is with those who are As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.).”

[Qur’an 8: 46].

7. Stay mindful of the other person.

Not everyone is the same. Respect each other’s differences and be aware of the fact that we’re all one Ummah.

May Allah ﷻ help us rectify our mistakes, follow the true path, and beautify our acts and behavior. Allahumma Aameen!
