The Exemplary Wife in Times of Trial

In Islam, marriage is founded upon compassion (mawaddah), mercy (rahmah), and cooperation between spouses. Allah ﷻ said:

“And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who give thought” [Quran: 30:21]

Difficult moments, such as illness, poverty, or social isolation, test the strength of this bond. On this note, Allah ﷻ revealed historical and prophetic examples in the Quran to guide believers in such situations. One such example is the story of Prophet Ayoub (عليه السلام), who endured prolonged trials and hardships with remarkable patience as mentioned in the Quran as a symbol of steadfast faith. While the Quran highlights the patience of Prophet Ayyub (عليه السلام), narrations also draw attention to the remarkable patience, loyalty, and support shown by his wife during the years of suffering, revealing the essential role of a wife in sustaining family stability and spiritual strength during hard times.

The trials of Prophet Ayoub (عليه السلام)

Prophet Ayoub (عليه السلام) was among the noble prophets whose names are mentioned in the Quran. Allah ﷻ bestowed Prophet Ayoub (عليه السلام) with much wealth, including livestock, cattle, crops, many offspring, and beautiful houses. Allah ﷻ  tested him, and he lost all his possessions (Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 2003, p. 3643).

He was then tested with his health, as narrated by Ibn Asaker:

Job was a man having much wealth of all kinds; beasts, slaves, sheep, vast lands of Haran, and many children. All those favors were taken from him, and he was physically afflicted as well. Never was a single organ sound except his heart and tongue, with both of which he glorified Allah, the Almighty, day and night. His disease lasted for a long time until his visitors became disgusted with him. His friends kept away from him, and people abstained from visiting him…” Ibn Kathir (n.d. p.94).

He testifies that the severity of Allah’s ﷻ test of his slaves depends on their closeness to their Lord. As narrated by Mus’ab bin Sa’d, his father, Sa’d bin Abu Waqqas, said:

I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, which people are most severely tested?’ He said, ‘The Prophets, then the next best, and the next best. A person is tested according to his religious commitment. If he is steadfast in his religious commitment, he will be tested more severely…” (Sunan Ibn Majah 4023).

Despite these trials, he remained steadfast in his faith and constantly turned to Allah ﷻ in supplication. Allah ﷻ mentions his prayer in the Qur’an:

And [mention] Job, when he called to his Lord, ‘Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the most merciful of the merciful.’” [Quran 21: 83].

Allah eventually rewarded his patience by restoring his health and blessings, making his story a lasting symbol of endurance and trust in divine wisdom.

The role of the wife of Prophet Ayoub (عليه السلام)

When everyone left Prophet Ayoub (عليه السلام) during his prolonged affliction, he was left with only a truthful and loyal wife. She stood loyally beside her husband, caring for him with patience and trust, knowing that any hardship is temporary and is followed by ease as Allah ﷻ said in the Quran,

For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease [i.e., relief].” [Quran: 94:5].

The trial reached a stage where they both were in need so she had to go out to earn money. Despite this, she nursed and cared for her husband with loyalty and patience.

Patience and spousal support in Islamic teachings

Marriage is not just about love; it is also about facing life’s challenges as a couple. Whether it’s financial difficulties, family issues, or health problems, as in the case of Prophet Ayoub (عليه السلام). Patience helps couples support each other without giving in to frustration or despair. During ups and downs, one should be patient and supportive of one’s spouse. The life of our beloved Prophet ﷺ also demonstrates how one should be kind and supportive of their family. The Prophet ﷺ said:

The best of you is the one who is best to his wife, and I am the best of you to my wives.” (Sunan Ibn Majah 1977).

The wife of Prophet Ayoub (عليه السلام) embodies these principles through her actions and presence. Her example demonstrates that a wife’s role during difficult times includes emotional strength, moral encouragement, and spiritual partnership. Such support not only strengthens the marital bond but also serves as an act of worship rewarded by God.

Contemporary lessons for Muslim families

In an era where challenges such as illness, financial difficulty, and emotional stress are common, the lives of Prophet Ayoub (عليه السلام) and his wife offer valuable lessons for Muslim families. One can learn that no hardship is permanent and that every hardship is followed by ease. Moreover, regardless of the situation, one should maintain their trust in the Creator, seeking repentance constantly, and pray for Allah’s ﷻ help. When calamity befall Ayoub (عليه السلام), he returned to seeking his Lord’s aid upon the encouragement of his wife

“And [mention] Job, when he called to his Lord, “Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the most merciful of the merciful.” [Quran: 21: 83].

Therefore, his affliction was removed, and his health and wealth were restored. Furthermore, mutual support in marriage is essential for strengthening faith and family resilience. Thus, one can also learn that a wife’s contribution during adversity is the foundation of family stability.

Conclusion

The story of Prophet Ayoub (عليه السلام) and his wife highlights the vital role a wife plays in sustaining family stability through patience, loyalty, and spiritual support during hardships.  Through their example, we learn how marriage is a partnership grounded in compassion and faith. The wife’s emotional resilience and moral encouragement help overcome difficulties and strengthen the marital bond as an act of worship. Contemporary Muslim families can learn from this narrative that trust in Allah ﷻ, perseverance, and mutual support are key to enduring trials and achieving relief. Thus, the wife’s role remains essential for nurturing faith and family resilience.
