Ramadan Reminders 2022, Day 26

DAY 26: THE FRUITS EATEN BY THE MESSENGER OF ALLAH ﷺ

The Prophet ﷺ consumed nutritious and healthy food. Living in the desert, the body demands to balance the external heat with the coolness of food. Fruits, a major source of nutrients, were enjoyed by our beloved Prophet ﷺ. Ibn al Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him), in his book The Prophetic Medicine, mentioned that watermelons are a great source of hydration for the body; they cleanse the stomach and remove ailments. He advises us that it is good to consume watermelon when it is warm. However, if it is cold, it is better to have it with some ginger to compensate for the harm. He further states that watermelon should be eaten before meals; else, it may lead to nausea.

As for dates, Ibn al Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) stated that dried dates strengthen the liver, ease bowels, increase the production of semen, and improve a sore throat, especially when combined with pine. However, those who are not accustomed to eating dried dates can experience headaches and dental problems, unless they are combined with almonds and poppy. Dried dates have the potential to kill worms, especially when eaten in an empty stomach.

May Allah ﷻ bless us with the best of provisions in this world and the Paradise.
